Launching With a Partner

Do the following to launch your kite with a partner:

    1. Chose a suitable area to rig up your trainer kite.
    1. Unpack your kite and place some sand on the trailing edge of the kite so it doesn’t blow away.
    1. Lay out your lines upwind of the kite (upwind setup) and make sure there are no twists or tangles in the lines, and that Red is on the Left
    1. Attach your safety leash. Most trainer kites use the wrist leash system with a velcro strap.
    1. Have your partner pick up your kite by the leading edge and hold it up to catch the wind.
    1. When the kite has filled with wind, indicate to your partner to let go. Pull on the bar and fly the kite up to 12:00. BE READY FOR SOME PULL IN WINDY CONDITIONS!

Self-Launching A Trainer Kite

Self-launching with a trainer kite is easy if you know how to do it. The proper self launch with a trainer kite involves putting sand, dirt, small stones, or anything else to weight down the trailing edge of the kite.

    1. Choose a suitable area to rig up your trainer kite.
    1. Unpack your trainer kite and lay it on the ground so the underside of the kite faces upwards with the trailing edge into the wind. If you weight down the trailing edge of the kite as you unroll it on the ground, it will help keep it from flapping around in the wind.
    1. Place your rocks, sand, or sandbags on the trailing edge of the kite to hold it down.
    1. Lay out your lines upwind of the kite (upwind setup) and place the bar on the ground.
    1. Attach your safety leash.
    1. Gently pull on the control bar to pull the leading edge off the ground and into the wind. The kite should start to fill with wind and be ready to fly.
    1. Once the kite is ready to fly, give a firm pull on the control bar to lift it off the ground and into the air. The weight you used slide off the trailing edge and let your kite go free.
  1. Be prepared for for a lot of pull when the kite takes off. As it is going to fly right through the wind window on it's way to 12:00,

Once you have the kite over head at 12:00, check to see it its flying properly and with both lines having equal tension. The kite should sit overhead and not pull one way or another. If so, check your line lengths to make sure they are equal.

Using the Safety Leash

Knowing how will save you a lot of pain, but you need to do the opposite of what your instincts tell you.

Now that you have your kite in the air, it’s time to learn one of the most important things a beginner must know - how to use your safety system. Assuming that your kite has a safety leash (it should) and that you are wearing it all you need to do is:

LET GO OF THE BAR!

So why is this a difficult thing to do? It’s the opposite of your natural reaction.

Let’s think about it. You use the safety system when things get out of control; when you get overpowered and don’t have time to react. You’re getting jerked and pulled by the kite and you have more power than you can handle. What do most people do? They instinctively fight back. They flex their muscles, clench the bar, and fight with the kite. When learning to kiteboard, its important to develop the muscle memory of using your safety systems and training your brain to "just let go" of the bar.
